Youth Baseball - Rookie Advanced Rules

Roster

  • There total number of players on a roster must be at least 8 and a maximum of 13.

  • Rosters should be completed prior to game time and a copy should be made for the opposing team head coach and score table.

Equipment

  • Each player will need a bat, helmet and glove.

  • Bat requirements and restrictions

    • The largest barrel allowed in this division is 2 and ¼ inches.  For the safety of all players, coaches from both sides should ensure proper bats are used.

  • Helmet requirements and restrictions

    • All batting helmets are required to have a face mask attached.

    • Helmets must be approved for play in baseball – bicycle helmets or other helmets may not be used.

  • Real baseballs will be used in this division.

General Game Play

  • Outs will be made in this division.

  • If a runner is tagged or there is a force out, that runner must return to the dugout, however, there are no out limits during gameplay and each team will bat through the entire batting order each inning.

  • Score will be kept.

  • Each game will consist of 3 full innings and every player should hit 3 times and play in the field 3 times.

  • There are a maximum of 12 players allowed in the field for defense, including 7 outfielders, 4 infielders and 2 pitchers.  If a team has less than 12 players they should remove positions from the outfield first.

  • Each player should play 1 inning in the outfield and at least 1 inning in the infield every game.

  • 2 coaches are allowed on the field at any given time to give instructions, however, coaches should not interfere with a player or the ball until the play is dead. 1 additional coach may assist with instructions from the front of the dugout.

Batting

  • Batting orders will be set prior to game play and will be established by each head coach.

  • This is a tee based division.

  • There are no strikes or outs.  A player may take as many swing as necessary to hit the ball off the tee and the ball will be considered in play when the ball stays in fair territory.

  • When batting, teams will bat through the entire order in a half inning regardless of how many “outs” are made.

  • Players should not throw bats after a hit is made.  It is important at a young age that the players learn this for the safety of all involved.  Please encourage players to place bats down after hitting.

Base Running

  • After hitting the ball, the player should put the bat down, not throw it, and run to first base.

  • Base runners may advance as many bases as they can until a throw is made by the fielding team.  Once a throw is made, the play will continue to be live until a runner reaches a base or they are tagged or forced out.

  • After a throw, the runner may only continue to the base they are headed to and may not advance any further.

  • Base runners will remain on the base and may not lead off before the ball is hit.

  • When the last batter in the order is up during a half inning, once the play is deemed “dead” according to the rules the inning is over and all runners that have crossed home plate before the play is dead will count as a run.

Fielding

  • When playing in the field, players must be rotated from infield to outfield between innings so that every player has a chance to play both infield and outfield at least once.

  • Outfielders must be spread out as evenly as possible and must be in the grass, or in the event that the infield is large, far enough back to have enough separation from the infielders.

  • Outfielders should be encourage to throw the ball from the outfield, not run it in.  An outfielder cannot make an out at a base by running it in from the outfield, they must throw it in.

  • When placing infielders, players should be placed in normal infield positions including 1st, 2nd, short stop, 3rd and pitcher, however, 2 pitchers will be placed in the infield in this division.  The pitchers should be placed on either side of the coach who is pitching on the mark in the field.

  • Fielders should be encouraged to make plays in the infield including tagging runners, throwing the ball and tagging bases.

Pitching

  • This division requires all pitchers to wear either a fielding mask or a batting helmet with a face mask when playing the pitcher position.

  • There should be 2 players placed in the pitching position when fielding on a mark in the field.

  • A player may not play the pitching position two innings in a row, but in a three inning game may play the position the 1st and 3rd inning.

Game Length

  • Games will be 3 full innings long, regardless of timing.

  • Each team will bat 3 times and play in the field 3 times for each game.
